Fundment
Fundment wanted to make better use of its open-plan space at 58 Berners Street, creating a workplace that felt warmer, more considered and more flexible.
The team had seen our work for Gleeds in the same building and loved the look and feel of the space. That gave us a clear starting point: to bring the same level of care and detail to Fundment, while creating something with its own identity.
The brief was to move away from a stark, open-plan setting and create a softer, more welcoming environment with the feel of a members’ club. A space that could support day-to-day working, informal meetings, social moments and events.
Fundment’s space was open, sparse and underused. The main challenge was making the open-plan area feel cosy and welcoming. We achieved this by creating a range of lounge and co-working areas, giving the space a more varied, comfortable and human feel.
We developed a furniture plan that gave the space more purpose, while keeping it flexible. The layout centred around an open breakout area that could shift between everyday use and events. Movable furniture was key, with lighter pieces and flip-top tables that could be stored away when needed.
Alongside the furniture plan, we delivered a full furniture pack and accessories package, including rugs, cushions, blankets, lighting, planting and smaller styling pieces. These details helped soften the space and bring the finished scheme together.
The final space is designed to adapt. It gives Fundment a comfortable breakout setting for everyday use, but can also be opened up for events, talks and larger team gatherings.
Furniture was chosen with flexibility in mind. Pieces can be moved, reconfigured or stored away, giving the team more control over how the space is used.
This approach meant the space could keep its open-plan feel, while becoming far more useful. Instead of one large, empty area, Fundment now has a setting that supports different ways of working and gathering throughout the day.
To create the members’ club feel, we introduced a richer material palette, softer textures and more layered styling.
Curtains, painted walls and ceiling rafters helped transform the feel of the space. These elements added warmth and depth, while also supporting the acoustic performance of the open-plan area.
The ceiling rafters were developed with acoustic considerations in mind, with support from Resonics on the design, depth and quantity required. Curtains added another soft acoustic layer, helping the space feel calmer, more comfortable and less exposed.
Sustainability was also part of the thinking. Rather than replacing everything, we looked at what could be reused.
Existing Hippo chairs, by NOR11, were reupholstered to bring them in line with the new scheme, rather than being replaced. Some lounge pieces and coffee tables were also reused where they worked within the palette.
This helped reduce waste and gave good-quality existing furniture a second life, while still allowing the overall design to feel fresh and complete.
The furniture selection balanced comfort, flexibility and character.
NORR11 was a key supplier within the scheme, helping to bring a relaxed, residential feel to the space. Andreu World’s Bolete lounge chairs were also specified, adding a softer lounge setting near the arrival area.
Every piece had a role to play, from movable event furniture to lounge seating, accessories and lighting. The result is a workspace that feels considered but not overdesigned – flexible, comfortable and ready to adapt.
