A day in the life of…Ellen Garrod

04 Sep 2017  |  People

With 100’s of products and over 14 floors, we look at ‘A Day in the Life of…’ Project Coordinator, Ellen Garrod, as she works on the Deloitte account.

How do you typically start your day?

I wake up at 6am and head straight to the swimming pool at Olympic Park. It’s on the way to work so I generally swim for a about a 1km then continue my journey to Liverpool St. from there I walk to the London office. Once I’m in the office I have breakfast and then I’m ready to start my day!

What does your typical day look like?

I am currently working on the Deloitte project at 1 New St. there are 100’s of products per floor from around 15 + manufactures, so in order to ensure we cover everything when ordering I will collate all items on a floor by floor basis and colour code them by supplier into a spreadsheet. It’s been a great reason to use all my colouring pencils! I will also touch base with Fritha, who is the account manager, to see how the project is progressing.

What are your main duties?

All furniture for Deloitte is my responsibility from ordering until it gets to the warehouse so this includes checking lots of paper work to ensure everything is in order and will be delivered on time. I will also attend meetings with our project managers where we will go into lots of detail about the product specifications to ensure everything is correct and change delivery dates if needed.

The project is spread across 14 floors so this keeps me very busy!

I am also unofficially in charge of the music selection in the office although my choice in 80/90’s throw backs is not always received well by our MD Jon!

What is it like working with the projects team?

It’s a great team to work with, we all work really well with each other. I was the only Project Coordinator when I first started so it’s great that our team has grown. We all bounce ideas off each other and share product knowledge so there’s a lively, group feel within the team. We also socialise outside of work too so you really feel like you’re working with your friends and not just colleagues.

What is it like working for Sketch?

It’s really great working for Sketch, they have high expectations of the team, but you are really well rewarded as an individual and as a group. They are definitely the most driven company I have worked with and they only hire people who are as passionate and driven as everyone else so there’s a very tight family feel. If you’re having a bad day, the team are really supportive and kind and if you’re having a good day everyone is happy for you too!

How do you unwind after a long day?

Exercise! I love to go indoor rock climbing or cycling. Once a month we are at our warehouse in Surrey where there is a wakeboarding park close by. So once a month I go wakeboarding. Keeping active definitely helps me unwind and relax.

Favourite part of the day?

Lunch! And not just because of the food! I have never worked for a business that provided a proper break out space! It’s fantastic because you get to talk to someone different every day. There’s a few of us that play pool too which is nice way to break up the day and as most of my work is computer based, it’s gives your eyes a much needed rest from staring at a screen.
