Lee Horsman, Head of Design at Sketch Studios visits the Stockholm Furniture and Lighting Fair 2018

What was the Design Fair all about?

Stockholm Furniture & Lighting Fair is the world's leading event for Scandinavian design. Showcasing the best Nordic brands, it sets the tone for the ‘Scandi’ inspired trends we will see in our homes and workplaces over the next 12 months.

What were your impressions of the Fair?

It was my first time at this particular design fair and I was extremely impressed with the high quality of exhibition as well as the projects on show.  There was a good blend of Nordic brands with many having a long and rich history in craft with some dating back to the 1800’s.  The ‘Scandi’ trend is one that has always been the basis of many furniture designs due to its classic, clean shapes and high-quality finishes. Swedish people have always invested in their furniture, it may cost a little more, but when you buy a Fritz Hansen chair the belief is you will own it for 40 years and then hand it down to your children.

What were the main trends?

There was a clear colour trend consisting of a very muted pallet, dusty pink featured strongly on nearly all stands. Rich fabrics such as velvet are making a comeback, with its lux texture adding warmth to the muted colour pallets.

What was your favourite piece?

The stand out piece for me was Fritz Hansen’s POT Chair, originally designed in 1959 this chair has been taken out of the back catalogue and revived in modern fabrics showcased on an impressive stand. It shows the strength of classic Scandinavian design as it is still such a relevant piece that wouldn’t be out of place in any modern interior.

What was the biggest surprise?

The biggest surprise was the amount of manufactures moving into additional items and homewares. One of my favourites is the homewares by NORR 11, their pieces are contemporary with a nod to the past, are a decent price point and a quality finish.
